This explains why these port cities are used as seasonal turnaround ports for homeporting (roundtrip itineraries) by many major cruise companies with ship deployments in the Caribbean.

In late-February 2019, a 3-party consortium won the bidding for redevelopment and management of Prince George Wharf and the cruise port's related areas. The new cruise terminal will be also integrated into Bay Street and downtown. In 2016 was completed another (USD 48,4 million) renovation project at Cruise Terminal 5 (used mostly by Carnival Cruise Line). Among the improvements were terminal expansion, pier elongation (by 120 ft / 37 m), new mobile boarding bridges, new parking garage (capacity 1044 cars).
Spain will reopen ports to international cruise ships from June 7, 2021 the government announced, citing improving pandemic situation and the vaccination rollout. Orlando City is bounded by Port Canaveral (north), Banana River (east), Cocoa Beach (south) and the Atlantic Ocean (west). As a deepwater seaport, Port Canaveral has a very high volume of traffic. From a total of 6 million cargo tons moved through the port annually, 2,7+ million tons (3 million short tons) are bulk cargoes.

It exports fresh citrus and bulk frozen citrus juice is stored in one of the biggest freezer warehouses in the state. The port also receives salt for water softening, lumber, automobiles, steel sheets and plates.
In May 2023, were announced plans for a new cruise terminal at the site of the Bluepoints Marina. The facility (projected cost US$175M) could be ready/inaugurated in 2026-Q4. In April 2023, Port Canaveral officials proposed the construction of a new cruise terminal.
Connecting to Con Edison power grid, the shorepower system allows ships to run their onboard systems without using diesel generators. This eliminates ~1500 tons of CO2, ~95 tons of NOx, and ~6,5 tons of soot/particulate matter annually. Royal Caribbean offers day excursions to Pearl Island (5 hours each) themed as "Beach Escape", "Beach Escape & Snorkel" and "VIP Cabana for 2". In 2014, the total number of handled intermodal TEUs was 391,596. Petroleum and scrap metals are handled at bulk cargo terminals, many of which are located along the port's straits and canals. It encompasses an area with a radius ~25 mi (40 km) and includes all navigable waterways in NY–NJ Harbor Estuary.
Demolition works (of the existing Terminal 3 building) started in April 2018, at the cost of US$210,000. The facility is on the site of "Cruise Terminal 3" (port's southern / B side), west of Jetty Park and east of The Cove (dining-shopping-attractions complex). On June 7, 2017, engineering and design works for the new terminal were officially approved. In April 2023 was proposed the construction of a new cruise terminal on the Port's southern side.
